Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel
August 22, 2004
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Back to Grayton !

I ran my first bottom trip out of Grayton in 2 months today. We had a limit of snapper, 3 grouper, a scamp, some big mingos and a trigger fish. Not to bad for a 4 hr in August. The fish bit a little better than I expected but it wasn't a hot bite by any means. There are more groupers around than what you'ld expect this time of the year ( my folks broke off several)but we only had one one mackeral bite and he was short. I 've got trips the next three days so I should have a good handle on whats living where by the end of the week.

I almost hated coming back, still plenty fishy over at Indian Pass but no more charters. Last Sunday was my last real Tarpon trip and we got one to the boat around 175#. I wired 'em up, grabbed his jaw and yelled for my crew to quick take the picture only to be informed they had forgotten to bring a camera. Oh well, we pulled a scale so the angler would have braggin' rights. My guy then left his scale at the bunkhouse when he went home!- At leat he's consistent, don't know if anybody will believe he caught a big 'un tho with no proof!

Monday we Tarpon fished for a little bit till the sun came up enough to chase triple tails ( had one on too but the hook pulled). GREAT day to look for tails- got one @ 20# and another at 12# ( plus 2 smaller ones) and blooped a giant- probably 28-30# along with some other good ones. Why is it that the most fun things to chase are the also the most frustrating? (kind of like members of the opposite sex).

Tuesday was an inshore trip, went up in the backcountry right off and got 5 redfish to the boat and lost 2 REAL ones ( there's that frustrating thing again but boy are redfish fun on ultra lights in a foot of water!) Went back to the camp, picked up a second angler and warred on the trout for a while.

Wednesday was a short AM trip but still got a red and several trout over 4#-

And then I had to pack up and move- the only bad thing about going to the "Pass" is it always takes at least 3 days to get my act together again at the end of summer-.

Plenty of fish no matter where you go in NW Fla.--- Go get you some!!

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
