Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel
October 4, 2004
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well the hurricanes have finally left the headlines and those of us that were not affected have got back to life as usual. Like FISHING !!

The storms have been good to us fish wise and moved lots of critters in to catch. The weather has been great, it's calm , warm and the fish are starvin'.

I've fished the past 7 days and we have filled the box every day. The groupers are on all the rocks, plenty of kings on the big inshore spots and the there are as many triggers around as I have ever seen.

My trip today was three locals, one who was born here over 80 years ago. At the end of our 4 hours he told me that was the best fishing trip he had ever had in the Gulf and he had made his first one at 12. As I said, there are lots of fish about. I have got to give him credit that he outfished his son in law and his buddy , both of whom were way younger. Experience beats exuberance anyday!

Day before yesterday we had a great box of assorted snapper, grouper, jacks etc but the glory fish was a 30# King. First "smoker" I've seen this fall but have heard reports of several others so I guess they are showin up too. Sam Wesley, one of the other Grayton capt.s had a 25# Black fin Tuna that day as well.

I'm lookin' at the weather and looks like it is going South starting wed. PM. I hate getting days off when the fishing is this good ! Time to work on tackle i guess.

Congradulations to my old buddy Pat Atkins, capt of the "Strike Zone" out of Destin. He is currently leading the grouper division of the Rodeo with a 60# (gutted weight) gag AND has second place with a 56# as well.- I had to tease him and say he's just lucky they won't let me enter.

If you got a boat that floats you need to go- 'IT just doesn't get any better than this"

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
