Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

I could just say look at the last report and repeat but that sounds kinda lazy-
The fishing remains quite exceptional but the weather has been all over the board the past couple weeks. I have had to cancel more trips than I have beem able to run since my last time typing this. It is the middle of October so thats really not unusual. Those slick calm 85 degree days just don't come as often now as they do in August !
Yesterdays trip was locals. One of my best friends from years ago and his construction crew. He asked me to try to "hurt thier feelings". A little sloppy first thing but the seas laid down as we went along and let me get to where I wanted. The first stop I gave his crew 2 hook rigs to train 'em up and put some triggers in the box. That part of the plan worked. Gave my old buddy a slip lead rig and he got his feelings hurt on the first drop! Big bite, 'bout tore the rod out his hands and he yanked ( always the big no no). After several lost baits he finally got a good grouper up and coming off the bottom only to have it eaten half way up by a big bull shark. I told him he was lucky 'cause the way he was fighting the fish it would have died of old age long before it made the boat if the shark wasn't around. By the end of our 4 hours everybody had great story of the big one that got away. One fellow 'round 22 years old and built like my refridgerator ran down a big mingo on a 6/0 and meat rod ( read winch) and had grouper take him to the rail and leave him there. I don't think this boy had run into too many things ( or folks) that could do that.
At the end of our trip we had 13 groupers, a dozen Red snappers, 4 amberines, a pile of triggers and the biggest Spanish I've seen all year in the box (6lb.11oz.).We even got a big Bull up to the boat and took his picture before I broke him off. Everybody was talking about the ones they couldn't land tho-. Some times it's what you don't catch that makes the trip.
On the inshore scene things are looking good as well. My friend from yesterday, Donnie Rosicka is currently leading the pompano division of the rodeo with a 4.3 lb fish. I was on the beach a couple evenings ago confirming the sunset and watched a vacationer catch a couple pompano, a couple catfish and a skipjack.I have seen big schools of spanish and skippies on the beach 1st thing in the AM when I'm catching bait. I talked to capt. Tim Harvey over at Indian Pass the other day and he said trout fishin' was "real easy". Redfish were still a little harder but starting to get into gear as well. I have heard some scattered tales of flounders around the passes also. One of my nieghbors tried to run out of Panama city last week on a sloppy day ( I canceled)and turned around at the pass. They went to the Hathaway bridge and hooked 3 nice grouper in the Bay and landed one at 15#!
remember- golf is for people that can't fish
