Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Too windy to stack BB's

Or Fish!!

Unemployed again today! Out of the last 2 weks I have only been able to run 4 days. The wind blew (and blew) from the East until T.S. Barry and since then has howled out of the West The paid prognosticators claim it will be nice tommorrow and back to a regular weather pattern. As I have always said- most of those guys can't predict dark---- I sure hope they are right this time.

Now folks, it's rare that there is someone on the boat that wants fish in the box more than me. Those that go with me know I get pretty fired up in a rally and want as much action as we can get. If the captian says is too rough to want to go- you probably should listen. After all, going fishing is the easy part for me, all the work is getting ready to go AND if I don't go I don't get paid!! The safety factor is a biggie too. We are running a small boat through the surf- no pass, no jetties, no do-overs. If that boat goes sideways on the bar and we take a wave over the side bad things are going to happen. Remember, it's supposed to be fun!!! Hard to have fun when you can't stand up and the boat is full of water!! If you don't have enough confidence in your captian to heed his advice cheerfully- you should find another captain!

The fish are still out there tho and seem to be pretty hungry. Day before yesterday it was beautiful in the AM so I caught bait, picked up my crew at 7:30 and blasted off. I broke my capacity rule and took the coast guard max of 6 'cause the crew was 4 little girls age 5 to 12 and 2 dads. The dads assured me the girls were all water rats and would be into the fishin' game. They told the truth and we had a big time. The only casualty was a pink play-dough shark that got squished on the deck in the middle of a mackeral rally-no tears, just a fuss from dad to put the toys up and hold a rod!

While the bigger girls caught some FINE fish on thier own the plan was for an adult to hook a fish, get it the first 10 feet up and then hand the rod to a kid and yell encouragement. I wish a lot of the guys I take would listen as well and fish as hard as these kids did. We came in on our 4 hour with 17 Red Snapper, a Black Snapper, a Scamp, 2 Black Grouper, 3 Triggers, 3 Kings, a spanish and a small (20#) shark. The shark bought forth all kinds of squeels and yells interspaced with some giggles. They took turns sitting on the fish box to keep the lid down for an hour after we boxed the shark! One of the trigs was about 7-8#, the biggest I have seen in a couple years and 1 king was pushing 20#! I do have a big time with kids!

That pink play-dough dries pretty hard to the deck tho-stuff was a pain to scrub off!

Here's to light winds and calm seas!

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
