Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big 'Tails

While we have had lots of exitement the past 12 days or so the biggest news is probably the movement of BIG tripletails to the area. While these prehistoric crappie on steriods are not here in the numbers of last year there are more huge ones than I have ever seen. The Tarpon went on a feed that defied all logic and had everybodys blood pressure so high we all came in beat from almost too much fun. Like all good things it came to and end with some bad weather but seems to be picking up again today. I have the day off to celebrate a daughters birthday- I'm hoping she'll want to go Tarpon fishin' latter!

Here is the play by play since my last report---

July 15th-Sun. Jumped 7 tarpon !!! Got 4 to the boat 'tween 75# and 125#- as good as it gets!!!

July 16th-Mon Jumped 6 Tarpon, got 2 over 100# to the boat, lots of sharks too--

July 17th-Tue. Only one fish on but got 'em to the boat, a 175-180# monster that 'bout beat down an angler!

July 18th Wed. No Tarpon around! Went Triple Tail fishin' at 2 Pm- Got 7 !!!! tagged 2, boxed 5 including a 20# and a 27#!!!!!

July 19th Thurs. Jumped 5 Tarpon including a 250# giant that tried to jump in the boat 8 times (eventually threw the hook) 2 to the boat over 100# and 2 nice triple tails

July 20th fri.- Jumped 3, got 1 to the boat.

July 21st Sat. Jumped 1 Tarpon early, HOT fish!!!, tarpon show died . Went Lookin' for 'tails, got 2, one at 20#!!!

July 22nd Sun. Jumped 3, got 1 to the boat. The last fish we hooked knew every trick there was, finally got off by breaking the leader---from draggin' on a cleat when he jumped over the bow!!!

July 23rd. Mon.-- Windy, rainy, rough!!! canceled

July 24th Tues. Not much happening, saw a few Tarpon and had my anglers throw at a 25#+ triple tail that never saw the baits. Called it a half day at 1:30 due to incoming squall.

July 25th Wed. Scallopin' trip in St. Joe Bay. Absolutely gorgeous- I got my limit but my folks were a little short---

capt Will just called me (son) from West Pass and said there are lots of Tarpon around this AM- wish I was there!!!

I would like to add that the other "commited" local Guides have been doing real well also. Capt's Pete White, Trey Landry and Tim Harvey been launching big fish regularly as has my son, William has aslso landed 2 triple tail over 20# this past week as has capt Dan Davis.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of fishing here at the "Pass" is that all the guides get along so well and talk to each other through the day letting everyone else know whats going on where they are. Makes for a great day!!!

capt Larry

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
