Summertime..and the Fishin' Is Easy

Capt. Larry Pentel
June 28, 2011
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Like the title says, it's been pretty easy to come in with a nice box of fish so far this summer. The Red Snapper are still thick (and BIG), the Groupers are here as well. We do have have the added disadvantage of having to throw back all the Gags but if the anglers can figure how to get 'em up we can usually find a Red one or two to bite as well. The Kings have been rather subdued here lately but everything can't be on the feed at once !

Yesterday started out a little swelly but the surf came up fast and while it didn't hurt fishing any in the morning (see photo below) it kept all the beach launch boats on the sand for the afternoon though. This morning I was on the beach at daylight as always but today I was watching 4 to 5 foot waves crashing on the bar. While my folks are disapointed I know it at least lets me write a report and catch up on all that boat maintenance ( and federal book work)that needs doin too...

A Great Catch Ahead of the Surf- check out that big Red Grouper

While the grouper bite isn't "on" everyday it's been on overtime a few days the past week. My folks on a couple days were able to limit out on both Red Snappers and Red Groupers on morning trips.

The weather this day was just perfect-- fishing wasn't bad either.

I take kids all the time and while just about all of 'em have a blast some of 'em get remarkable catches.

"I caught that one".. by god, she did too.

Okay , We can only keep 4 snappers and the grouper bite isn't on-- what to do for a couple hours.. Why go trolling of course

Some from the top .... and some from the bottom

Red Snapper season is open for about 3 more weeks. I am fortunate to be booked up and look forward to a bunch more racks of Red. As much fun as it is though my mind is allready starting to drift towards big silver fish aimed at the heavens in another month. I guess that's what keeps folks like me beating up our bodies and equipment on these little boats, not just the excitement of todays catch but looking forward to the next catch, the next season, the next fish of a lifetime for somebody..

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
