Tarpon Beware!

Capt. Larry Pentel
June 29, 2008
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today is my last day in Seagrove for 7 weeks! I'm off 1st thing in the AM to Indian Pass for Tarpon season. The reports from over there have been real good and I'm chompin' at the bit to launch some fish as big (or bigger) than I am.

The fishing here has been fantastic and up till yesterday the weather has been cooperating as well. I ran 32 out of the last 34 days and we have come in with some memorable catches. The Kings continue to make you hide the hook while you bait it a lot of days out of fear one will jump in the boat to eat a live herring. We have had a lot of mackerel rallies that have lived up to the "as good as it gets" statement. Limit catches of Red Snapper every day as well tho the size average has gone down a little since early in the season. hard to argue with a hot bite of any size tho---. There continue to be some cobias around and we have added several of those tasty critters to the box over the past 2 weeks. Most of the ones I have found were traveling with a school of amberjacks or some big wad of other fish. The hard part is getting the bait to the cobia before somebody else grabs it!

while this is a fine rack of fish- big black snappers and a cobia for glory- we spent a large portion of the trip fighting the monster below-

Not only was he caught on a spinning rod with 40# test he also ended as the guest of honor at a large fish fry!

Another cobia on top of a great catch of kings and snappers

The amberines have made a pretty good appearance also. They fight just like an amberjack on steroids! It's a good thing they don't get any bigger or we'd need 80 wides to catch 'em!

The only bad thing about a great catch is I have to spend 2 hours cleaning 'em all!

While I hate to leave "easy catchin" I'm looking forward to launchin' big silver rockets and sight fishin' triple tails, Plus Indian Pass is so much more "Florida as I remember" than Seagrove has become in July. No traffic, lines at the grocery or crowds on the beach. PLUS, I get to go scallopin'!!

My trip for July 7th had to cancel so I have an opening the 1st part of the month. Still several days the last part of July and a few in August open. Give me a call, come spend the night in the bunkhouse and lets give a BIG fish a hard time!!!

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
