Warm n Reds

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Allright; it's finally felt like Florida here since my last post. After a cold January the last half of Feb. has not been bad at all. I spent last week over at Indian Pass and even had a client get a little sunburned while sight fishing Redfish one afternoon ! I was over there for a week and all but one day was beautiful. While it rained in the morning early on Friday my angler and I were still able to fish the intercoastal from about 11 AM on and were quit comfortable in just long sleeve shirts.

On to the important stuff in a fishing report; We saw LOTS of Redfish. I got to "scout " my first full day there and found plenty of fish in about half the places I checked. I'd run to a bank, look for fish (catch one if I saw 'em) and then blast on so I would know where to look with anglers the rest of the week. My first charter trip had us see over 200 fish with shots at over 100. Mostly singles and small groups, I think the biggest school I saw all week was 7 fish. My kind of fishing!!

Great sightfishing on light tackle

The Trout were a different story, I did not find many in either Appalachicola Bay or up the Intercoastal in St Joe. The ones we did catch were all smaller fish. There seemed to be quite a few Sheepshead in St Joe though so that made for some action ( and a good dinner !) as well as some smaller Reds. The usual pattern for over there is that as the water warms the trout bite will pick up to great about the time the algae starts to get the water to murky to sight fish the Reds.....always nice when one species fills in as another thins out !

I'm back in the Seagrove/Grayton area and will probably be here for a while now. I have trips booked here starting day after tomorrow and with Spring Break beginning it will be busy in SOWAL.

The Jacks will be the target for another couple weeks along with Vermillions and Red Groupers. The Cobia run will be going strong by the end of March and the Spanish will be right in there with 'em as the Kings and Mahi's and everything else start to follow all the bait that will show up the first part of April........... A whole lot of fishing is fixin' to happen folks !

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
