Winter Fishing in Destin

Capt. Blake Nelson
January 6, 2013
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

This winter has started off colder than last year's and with no explanation of why I am thankful for it. Last year we didn't make it into the 30's hardly at all and most of February felt like Spring time. With the cooler temps, it has definitely felt like winter fishing and in due fashion the flounder bite has been strong. Flounder have made their migration out of the bays and into the Gulf where they are spawning and feeding constantly. Nearly every flounder that we are catching is packed with little cigar minnows as well as roe. We are also catching some good redfish and trout on the flats still but most days the water level is too shallow to keep our bay boats from getting stuck.

I am in the process of getting a few odds and ends taken care of with the two boats, but for the most part they are ready for action for the new year.
