Winter Reds

Capt. Larry Pentel

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

I'm afraid I don't have a gulf report since my last post. We have had a couple of really nice days but I was caught up in all the off season "fix and repair" projects.

I did get to take a group up the Inter-coastal last weekend for some inshore fishin' (to rough for the Gulf that day). All the rain (and cold) had me a little concerned with what we'd find. We trout fished for about an hour and only had 1 bite. Okay this isn't working--new plan. I went to a couple of my redfish spots and the 1st hole produced a nice fish. Just the one though, kinda odd for a spot tail to be by himself in the winter. On to the next hole and wham, bites right away but we're off on the "don't yank a circle hook" rule. I reset the boat, got an anchor out and we had steady action for a good while till we put the fish down. I went to another trout spot to let the reds regroup but all we found were sand trout. I think we went through 2 dozen shrimp to land 5. Back to the redfish school and we did manage to convince a few more to bite. I think the tally was 8 reds to the boat and 11 lost between getting the hook in 'em and the net under 'em.

We kept one red and all the sand trout for the grease-

I talked with 2 other boats that afternoon-One had caught 2 short trout and the other 3 shorts. I think we need to get some salt water back in the end of the bays 'fore the specks turn back on- Reds don't seem to be as "confused" with the onslaught of fresh water as the trout.

I still have 1 rod to build and couple more reels to go through and then I'm done with tackle. If I can get some fresh gel coat on the deck of the cat and some new electronics hooked up I'll be done with all the "projects". Maybe I'll get to go play fishin' a little before the season starts!

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
