Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The word for the past week was reef, more specific nearshore reef. The bite was on fire and the variety was some of the best of the year. Pompano, ladyfish, redfish, grouper, Spanish mackerel, sharks, sea trout, jacks, snapper, and grunts to name a few were on the menu. Shrimp tipped 1/8 oz long shank jig heads worked fine for most, but 2/0 circle hooks with cut pinfish or threadfin herrings produced a good bottom bite for grouper and over slot redfish. Using long shank hook prevents many of the break off's from the mackerel, as does bumping your leader to about 30 lbs. The mackerel seemed to like a slow retrieve or jigging motion about five feet under the surface. Shrimp under a float worked for the mac's as well. The backbay bite was very slow with cloudy hot water present in most of the bay. If you could find some cleaner cooler water you had a chance with some redfish and black drum. Shrimp tipped 1/8 oz jig heads worked best thrown up around the oyster bars and mangrove islands on high tides. Cut threads and pinfish worked well for them also. Work and area very well before moving on as the fish are not moving very fast in this oxygen poor warm water.
