Estero Bay Report

Capt. Jon Fetter
August 1, 2013
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing this past week in and around Estero bay has been up and down. We have good days followed by not so good due in most part to the changing water conditions in the back bay. The nearshore shark bite is crazy good right now with various species daily. Cut bait like thread fin herrings, silver trout, or ladyfish on 6/0 circle hooks fished in about 18 feet of water seems to be the best method. It might take 20 minutes to get the action going, but once it starts it will continue until anglers run out of bait. While waiting for the sharks you will also pick up Spanish mackerel, trout, and catfish by bouncing shrimp tipped jig heads on the bottom. The redfish bite in the back bay has been tough but possible using cut ladyfish around mangrove islands and grass flats near oyster bars. Anglers should soak multiple rods with ladyfish chunks on 2/0 circle hooks and wait. It can sometimes take up to 30 minutes for the first bite, but the fish have been upper slot in size. The snook bite has been the best opportunity for anglers looking for quality rod bending. Pinfish on 2/0 circle hooks thrown around the floating docks on strong tidal movements has been the ticket. White zoom jerk shads have also been working for these linesiders along the mangrove edges with high tidal flows. The seatrout bite has been the best in 2-4 feet of water near the passes using shrimp under popping corks. Remember it has been getting very hot in the afternoon so get out early, apply your sunscreen, and drink plenty of fluids.
