Estero Bay Report Week of May 19th

Capt. Jon Fetter
May 23, 2013
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The action continues to be focused on snook in the back bay this past week. With the abundance of white bait off the beaches the bite is extremely easy. Fish the floating docks and along the mangrove edges on high tide and you will catch snook. Free line your baits on 2/0 circle hooks and fish good moving water. They seem to feed better on stronger tidal flows. The trout bite on the grass has been very good as well. Shrimp under a popping cork or gulp shrimp will work fine. Look for clean water in the 3-4 feet range and this is where they will be. Anglers will also pick up ladyfish and jacks with this method. If redfish is what you are looking for your best bet is on the higher water around the mangrove islands. Fish the pockets and spend some time in each area before moving on. Shrimp on a jig head or cut ladyfish will work fine. There is plenty of big game for anglers to tackle with off the beaches in the form of sharks and tarpon. The quality shark bite is in about 15-18 feet of water. Anchor up start chumming and the sharks will come. It might take about 15-20 minutes for the first one to show, but after that it will be good action. Cut threads or jacks will work best for them and the variety has included spinners, blacktips, silky's, and a few hammers. The silver king's are here and feeding off the beaches in approx 25-40 feet of water. Anglers need to locate the fish and set up their drifts accordingly, or anchor up and chum the fish to them. Some prefer to use trolling motors to find and stay on the fish casting live thread fin herrings to them. All methods will work, but anglers need to find what works for them and go with it.
