Shrimp Tipped Jigs Bring Sheepshead, Trout and Drum to the Boat

Capt. Greg Stamper
February 27, 2015
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Last week's record lows were the turning point toward warmer weather and better fishing. High winds continued to muck up the shallow waters of Estero Bay early in the week. It then took 3 days for the water temperatures to head back in a warmer direction as the bite went from nothing to poor, and then finally good. Black drum, redfish, trout, sheepshead, and jack crevalle started to eat as water temps rose back into the mid 60's. Early in the week when the bite was toughest, the creeks and back bay haunts that had buffer zones from the strong North winds worked best. Fishing slow and low was a key there. As the weekend tides moved in and out the bay water cleaned up and fished much better. Shrimp on jigs and below popping corks continued to be bait of choice, as well as cut ladyfish on 2/0 circle hooks. White bait also brought in a few small snook that managed to snatch it them before the jacks did.

Target Species:

black drum, trout, sheepshead, redfish, jack crevalle
