Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week the fishing was pretty tough in the backbay's with the poor tides. The only high point of the week was the shark fishing. Just find 14-18 feet of water off the beach and start chumming. Use cut frozen threadfin herrings on 7/0 circle hooks with a small steal leader and just wait. It might take 15-30 minutes for them to show, but when they do it is on. Hammers, blacktips, spinners, bonnetheads, and even a few dusky's are all around. If action is what you are looking for this is a great place to start. They are not huge, but big one's could always show up. In the backbay, the redfish bite was pretty tough. Try using cut ladyfish or threadfin herrings around mangroves on high water. This will be your best chance at them. The trout bite was consistent this past week over the grass flats in 3-5 feet of water. Shrimp under a popping cork was the go-to method for them. You will also pick up ladyfish and small bonnethead sharks with this method. With regards to snook, they are around and feeding if you can get bait. There has been some whitebait off the beaches, but it might take a while to get enough. Free lined around the floating docks on 3/0 circle hooks is the set-up. Remember the season is still closed so get them in quick, take your pictures and return them to the water.
