Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Fishing on the nearshore reef has been crazy good. Shrimp on 1/8 oz jig heads has produced quality fish including mackerel, trout, pompano, jacks, snapper, ladyfish, and even sharks. The key is locating structure and the bait pods. The structure is holding the bottom feeders and the bait pods are holding the mac's, ladyfish, and jacks.
The backbay bite is good first thing in the a.m. before it gets too hot. Shrimp tipped jig heads have produced good catches of snook and redfish. The early mourning bite is also a great time to try top water plugs, i.e. rapala skitterwalks and heddon spooks and other artificial baits like jerk baits and gulp soft plastics. Anglers can also try their hand at some good trout fishing on the grass flats. Shrimp under a popping cork will work fine or you can try top water plugs like skitterwalks, spooks, or chuggers. Once the sun gets up and the water starts to warm might as well head offshore or back to the ramp, because they move way up into the mangroves and don't like to venture out. You can try cut or chunk bait for them, but you really have to work and area well before moving on.
