This week in Estero Bay

Capt. Jon Fetter
June 6, 2013
Estero Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

With the strong winds this past week the fishing has been somewhat limited to the backbays. Even with the winds the fishing remained strong with good variety and size. The redfish bite has been slow but fish have still been caught on higher tides up around the mangrove shorelines and oyster bars. Shrimp tipped jig heads seem to work best for this set-up, but anglers can also try cut ladyfish and whitebait under a float. Fish the wind driven shorelines and be patient, it has been slow process of finding them and getting them to eat. There has been a steady trout bite over the grass flats in 2-5 feet of water. The key seems to be locating the cleaner water and with the wind that has not been easy. Shrimp under a popping cork will be anglers best chance although gulp baits with the same presentation will work as well. If anglers want to try artificial, now is a good time. Try top water plugs like chug bugs or rapala skitterwalks early in the day and switch to jerk shads or rapala x-8 series baits as he day progresses. The one consistent bite this past week was the snook. Free lined white baits on 2/0 or 3/0 circle hooks thrown up around the floating docks and mangrove islands on high water was he ticket to these linesiders. Fishing the strong moving water was the best time for action.
