Backcountry Fishing on the Windy Days

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I hope my suggestions of gifts that I mentioned in my last Fishing Report were helpful.
For the past week we have had cool temperatures and quite a bit of wind but that has been good for some areas and not so good for others. The best thing about living here in South Florida is that no matter what kind of wind or how strong it is or how cold or hot it gets there is almost somewhere that you can fish and catch something. When the wind is blowing and I am going to fish Flamingo I normally head inside and fish the protected lee's of the islands. Whitewater Bay is littered with islands and some not all will have fish nearby. We have been catching lots of large sea trout, jacks, ladyfish, loads of mangrove snappers, a few redfish, snook and groupers and most of these fish have eaten Hook Up lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp although on our last trip into the backcountry the Cajun Thunder with a live shrimp was working good as well. On the windy days that I am fishing local trips I have been targeting the Finger Channels of South Biscayne bay and the islands and flats south of Soldiers Key and catching Spanish mackerel, bluefish, mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snappers, porgies, gag, black and red groupers, barracudas, snook, jacks, bluerunners and grunts. What makes fishing interesting in this area is the variety and at times non stop action. North Biscayne Bay has had a lot of trout for catch and release plus a few large jacks and snappers. Offshore the water has been choppy but the guys in the bigger boats are doing well on kingfish, lots of sailfish and some dolphins.
I still have scattered open days and half days available through the end of the year and open dates in January so if you get the urge give me call and let's set up a fishing trip.
Happy Holidays and a Very Safe and Prosperous New Year!

RECENT CATCHES:
I'm in Flamingo with Tom and his buddy Paul on this day and the wind is blowing at least 20 to 25. Heading into Whitewater Bay to get away from the wind and see what we can find. Paul releases a small snook along a shoreline using a Hook Up lure tipped with a Gulp shrimp and as a matter of fact everything we caught that day came off the Hook Up lure and a Gulp Shrimp. By days end we had released over 20 large trout, lots of large ladyfish, snappers, jacks and a small gag grouper and kept a slot sized redfish.
Today I am back in Flamingo and again the wind is blowing. we head into the backcountry but things are very slow due to cooler water but as the sun heats the water the fish turn on and by the end of the day Gene, Lance and Bill have released a couple dozen large sea trout, dozens of small snappers and lots of jacks and ladyfish.
Today I am in South Biscayne Bay with Marty and his longtime fishing buddy Steve. We start out by filling the well with live pilchards and by the end of the day we have released over a dozen mutton snappers plus mangrove and yellowtail snappers, at least a dozen red groupers, landed a 5 pound Spanish mackerel and fed a bigger one to a large cuda that we weren't successful in catching, two snook, a porgie, bluerunners, houndfish and a flying genuard.
