Busy weekend ahead, looks fishy!

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I had a couple goods days the past week, I fished with Dave, Phil, Roger and Bo down at Flamingo. We started out drifting looking for bait and catching 30 or so Trout, and a bunch of Ladyfish and Jacks. Once we caught our baits we went looking for some bigger bites! We were using a combination of live and chunked bait and it didn't take long. Dave grabbed the first fish which ended up being a big Lemon Shark, we got it up next to the boat and took some photos then released it. We were only out for half a day but the rods stayed bent the entire time. I was waiting for the tide to move in and when it did it really turned on. We had a school of Redfish sitting in a mullet mud and we hooked a bunch of them the biggest @ 26 inches. The rods were doubled over 2 and 3 at a time with Redfish and Sharks. It was fun and the guys were extremely happy.

Rick and Kathy Widener from San Diego were only here for a day but we had some calm weather first thing in the morning. I have been fishing with them for years and Kathy has always caught the Tarpon today we were trying to get Rick his. I had been on some Tarpon so we went looking for one, I had my rods rigged with the Rapala Subwalks. We saw a few rolling in the area and then like usual Kathy had one in the air. Rick was catching all the Trout and Ladyfish, he wanted that Tarpon! Kathy continued fighting it for a while but the jumping Tarpon landed on the line breaking it. Rick was still casting at rolling Tarpon hoping for one of his own and then it happened, he was hooked up. Rick was in heaven, for the last 5 years he has watched Kathy catch a lot of Tarpon. The Tarpon ate the lure came up, jumped a couple times and then it was gone. He was ecstatic and went back to casting at the rolling fish. The winds were kind early but now they were picking up @ 20 mph, I gave them a couple options they chose fishing for Tripletails. I ran the trap lines since they will be gone in a couple days and found a few small ones that we caught. The winds kicked up over 25 mph and I ran closer to shore, by now it was cranking and the fishing had completely stopped biting. We tried a bunch of different areas and Kathy finally said we're good lets go.

The winds have been brutal but should be coming down this weekend, which is Memorial day weekend. It will be crazy out there on the water be patient and careful. The Tarpon fishing should be interesting once the winds come down. The big Trout have been active in both N. and S. Biscayne Bays in the last couple weeks I have heard of several fish @ the 7 lb. mark and seen one that was bigger it had my live Mullet in it's mouth.
