Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
Its not winter but we definitely have a temperature change in South Florida, its been cool early in the mornings with water temps below 70 degrees. This will put the fish In a couple of different places either in deep holes or up shallow. I really prefer the shallows that way my clients can cast and not just drop a knocker rig tobottom. Don't get me wrong it works great when it really cold and there's not allot going on, but most people like to cast.
This week I fished with great clients Rick and Kathy from San Diego, we started off the day on a Snook spot which produced 12 Trout up to 23 inches. We were in Whitewater Bay and making our way to the Gulf. We stopped at all my spots and caught allot of fish on Gulps, they really like to fish with Gulp Shrimp. Kathy was bouncing the Gulp and got hit by a really big Snook, the fish came up jumped and wrapped around a tree. We tried to untangle it but the Shook managed to throw the jig. We moved a sort distance to another good spot and Kathy was instantly hooked up to another Snook while Rick was hooked up to a decent Trout. The Snook weren't schooled up today but enough to put some in the boat. The next spot, again a Snook spot produced 20 or so Trout. They also caught Jacks, Ladyfish, and a 15 inch Mangrove Snapper there.
They love to catch Tripletail on the buoys after netting some bait we ran 20 miles of traps not to see one Tripletail. This brought us down to the Cape Sable area so we went looking for a bite. we had plenty of Pilchards to live chum with. It worked, we caught a couple Snook and lots of Jacks. It was 4 o'clock and Rick said they had enough.
I am down at Flamingo today with my nephew Mark, I gave been teaching him the fishing business for the last couple years. He has the guide mentality of not having to be the one catching the fish but the one who helped catch the fish. When I fish with friends or family its about learning. I know where I can usually catch fish but I take the time to learn new things about areas I fish. I like to throw lures but there's no better way to learn what's in the area than live chumming. It takes 5 minutes to see if anything is there, so that's what we did.
We ran way north and fish the falling tide chumming on the way. The funny thing is the Snook and Redfish all ate a glow chartreuse tail Gulp Shrimp. The fish did turn on to the chummers and we caught a bunch and I few different areas in Whitewater Bay. The thing about chumming is it brings in everything so we stayed busy. On our last couple stops we really turned them onand Mark was starting to feel go about out catching me, until this fish below.
