Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
We spent the first six days of October down at Flamingo with two sets of anglers - and the fishing there was very good... This time of year there are lots and lots of baitfish schools up and down the Gulf coast of the Everglades from Cape Sable up to Lostman's River (and probably everywhere else from Naples to Key Largo...). Pilchards (scaled sardines), herring, bay anchovies (glass minnows as big as they get, around four inches...) but little in the way of mullet (guess they're partying somewhere else...). As you can guess every fish is on the feed and just about every day it was tarpon, snook, redfish, speckled trout, and even the first of the spanish mackeral, along with the usual resident small goliath grouper under fifty pounds.... Along the way more than a few sharks joined the party - we caught and released lemons, bulls, and one blackip - everyone just as hungry as usual.... but not one of them caught any of our hooked fish...

his first tarpon, around fifty pounds in a river... this one was on bait most of the rest of his fish were on lures...

His best goliath grouper, 18lbs on fairly light gear... carefully released. There are so many of these guys at many river spots that the moment a bait hits bottom - it's attacked and the fight is on...

Fresh in from the Gulf this bright silver trout is just the first of many as water temps begin to fall this time of year...

His first redfish of the trip - we caught and released 4 or 5, mid to upper slot reds on both bait and lures at one spot... Like the trout, the reds are finally making their fall appearance around creek and river mouths...
I'm waiting at this point for photos and maybe a video from my anglers the last three days. We fished a combination of fly and spinning gear and did every bit as well as Dave did the first three days - even catching good sized spanish mackeral on the fly as well as our biggest snook of the week, a solid ten pound fish on a lure...
My forecast for the rest of the month... if the weather holds the fishing will actually get better and better as the month progresses, if possible...
