Fishing report, Flamingo gulf coast, 7 October

Capt. Bob LeMay

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Made it out solo today -doing a bit of scouting for some up-coming bookings and got on the water well before sunup... Matter of fact I was 18 miles west of Flamingo when the sun finally showed up while I was sorting out a few things at the Little Shark River

Running at night with only the ghost of old Totch Brown for company takes a bit of concentration. I wouldn't advise it for newcomers to the 'Glades since the marker system is long gone. These next two or three days are the dark of the moon which makes it more difficult if that's possible....

By 9 Am I had a backcountry slam of speckled trout, snook, and redfish - most on the small side that either attacked a red/white Skitterwalk topwater bait - or a small leadhead with a Gulp tail... My best fish of the day was a bit too big - a 31" redfish that weighed in a 12.5lbs and just took the lightest rod on my skiff to the max - given that it only held 10lb braid it was a solid ten minute fight before a quick photo and the release... Here's the pic...

That rod, by the way is at least 12 years old - I built it specifically to be able to toss a shrimp at bonefish - it was never meant to take this kind of beating.... This is the first of hopefully many big reds in the next few months. My anglers are getting a bit tired of all the small reds we've been running into... By the way if the numbers of small snook and reds are any indicator the next few years should be good ones along the coast...

Be a hero... take a kid fishing...

Tight lines
