12/6/08 Flamingo-Florida Bay- Mixing It Up

Capt. Steven Tejera
December 7, 2008
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

We started our day today with a light cool breeze out of the North East. The wind kicked up around the middle of the day then died off again after a few storms rolled through. The water lately has been very low east of flamingo. Despite the low water, we came across some nice fish on the flats, even though we had to work hard at them to pick some fish up. The fish have been hanging around areas where they can come up
to the shallow water during the middle of the day to warm up, then also having and area with some deeper water close by to get into when the temperature drops. We fly fished for some parts of the day and mixed it up with the spinning/artificial. We managed to pick up some snook, trout, snappers, jacks, lady fish and at the end of our trip we came across some fish sitting in an area that had some deep pockets with shallow flats all around it. We saw a few fish tailing in this one area so out went the fly rod and after a few throws at a tailer, bam
hooked up! At first we thought it was a redfish the way it was tailing but when we got it next to the boat we noticed it was a 15-18lb black drum! Right before we got our hands on it, the hook pulled and we lost it(still have the picture in my mind as the fish swam off). Nonetheless, it was a great day on the water. This week we will be changing it up, look forward to an exciting report!!
