12/20/08 Flamingo-Florida Bay- Slick Calm Sick Bite!

Capt. Steven Tejera
December 21, 2008
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week we have had a break from the wind, unlike last week. My plan for saturday was to run to some new areas that had shallow flats with deep channels cutting through, shallow mangrove shorelines and flats with deep pockets. We started off with one of those mornings that is chilly, yet you can feel the sun warm up the air as it breaks through the darkness.
As the sun broke we started off fishing some mangrove shorelines. We made quick work of 2 redfish and 2 snook on the artificials. We then came across massive schools of mangrove snapper and sheepshead. After having some fun with the
snappers on artificial we ran to the shallow flats. As the sun was warming the shallow flats up the fish took advantage and so did we. We had some intense sightfishing for the rest of the day. Fish were tailing, pushing wakes, following sting rays, sitting in potholes, and crushing any artificial we through in their path. We even doubled up on a few overslot redfish.
We also caught some snook in the mix and some trout to complete the slam. Most of our fish today were caught on a pearl white Gulp Shrimp rigged weedless. The most important thing to keep in mind when working the artificials is to make it look as natural as possible. The weather is excellent, the fish are biting, it's time to go fishing!
