Florida Bay Fall Fly Rodding!!!

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Early fall is an excellent time for fly anglers especially in the area of Florida Bay. Fall brings slightly cooler water temperatures giving fish a chance to stay up on the flats a bit longer and in a better fly eating mood! Although the winds tend to pick up a bit in Fall which can be a nuissance it can also sometimes be a friend to anglers as the slight surface ripple can be a kind of cammoflouge when approaching a wary fish on the flats!

Fall is a great time of year to get out to the flats of west Florida Bay near Flamingo to persue Redfish and October is one of the best if not the best Redfish months in the calendar. Schools of nice sized tailing fish are not an uncommon sight this time of year and with some capable anglers boating up to 20 fish in a day it's a great time to get those numbers up!

While fall is a great time for the Reds we can't quite leave Bonefish out (my favorite)! Bay side flats of Key Largo and Islamorada are also full of good numbers of tailing hungry Bonefish and you sometimes don't even have to change flies after a day of Redfishing where as the same patterns will often work on both species. Good amounts of Tarpon can also be found as there are plenty of mullet schools around in fall to keep them fat and happy! This past weekend I put some of my new Redfish patterns to the test on another riendly outing with my old pal and veteran fly angler Scott Beard of Ft. Lauderdale, we weren't dissapointed! At the end of the day we had boated 8 slot Reds on the fly. I know my boats name is Broken Bones, but this Redfishing can be pretty addicting! I know enough with the Redfish already, although I still have some more to catch as I'll be fishing in the C.C.A Fall Fly Fishing Tournament with my buddy and fellow Cyberangler contributor Capt. Nick Angelo! I promise it's Bonefish time for my next report ( I'm overdue) till next time, tight lines............Capt. Joe!
