3/7/09 Florida Bay- Gettin Jiggy With It

Capt. Steven Tejera
March 10, 2009
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Again, this week we were faced with windy conditions and cool water temps. Last week we fished the Backcountry Fly Championship in the skinny water sightfishing. We switched it up this week for the Backbone lures 1 jig/fly Tournament out of Islamorada. I did some prefishing and did good catching both snook and reds on 1 jig. Fishing with me on tournament day were my good friends Ken and Todd. We ran from Islamorada to flamingo and focused on channel runoffs, islands, creeks and mangrove shorelines. First thing in the morning I get tight to a snook and Ken had just finished tying his jig on and grabbed the net to net my fish. After snapping our pics of the fish, Ken looks over at me and Todd and says "What happened to my jig" as he held his leader in his hand with no jig as it appeared it was cut clean. As I write this we still don't know what happened but by 8:15am Ken lost his jig. In this tournament each angler receives one jig of his choice(Backbone Lures skimmer jig) and has to fish with that jig all day. If you loose it...your done. So, Ken was done for the day(at least for any points in the tournament). Todd and I fished hard and caught snook, trout and jacks while Ken just fun fished and caught snook and redfish. Todd and I kept busy when we were not catching fish, we were trying to get our jig out of the under water obstacles we kept hooking into(we were really good at that). Even though we lost 1 jig early in the am and got back late to the tournament at the end of the day we still managed to have an excellent time. All three of us had a blast catching fish and competing in the tournament. I want to thank Paul Tejera for putting up a great tournament! Congrats to the winners!
It looks like this coming week the winds are laying down and the temps are going up. Should make some sweet conditions to do some sightfishing. Give me a call and we will set something up!
