Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

082914
It was great to be part of the Happy Bait 2014 with Capt. Jeff Maggio and a few hundred other die hard anglers/captains up at Pirates Republic grill. This was just a giant social media event which has every one excited for the fall mullet run. Lots of big names from salt to fresh, it was and impressive turn out. see everyone next year!

I am fishing Flamingo today with friend /accountant Fred Ortiz and he likes to just get away from everything. We started out in Coot Bay, his first cast was with a Storm Chug Bug (Red -White) and it got smashed by a big Snook which eventually let go. We had a little giggle about how hard the Snook hit the lure and he cast in the same area again, same result big Snook which let go! We had some fish popping on the shoreline but that was it as far as bite go. I ran north in Whitewater Bay hitting a bunch of spots and made my way out to the coast. We had a couple other big smashes on lures up in Ponce Bay but still no fish! We worked around all the points, Fred was still using a Chug Bug. I was throwing a Skitter Walk and we had extreme low water conditions which is perfect for top water fishing. Fred finally had a hook up that stayed on and we got our first Snook in the boat, we did his for a couple hours on the incoming tide. I lost my favorite big fish Skitter Walk on a really big Snook that cut me off on a head shake, had that lure for 4 years. I noticed a flash in the water and we had a school of Threadfin Herring on the bank, 1 toss of the net and live well was jam packed. We live chummed and Fred kept throwing the Chug Bug, until he hooked up a Jack. A 10 ft. Bull Shark waked up after it and ate the Jack and Fred's lucky plug after running a hundred yards with it. I decided to move and try my favorite chum spot, as soon as the baits hit the water there were boils behind us. It's usually a Snook/ Redfish spot but today it was big Mangroves. Fred had re-rigged with another color (Green) Chug Bug and it produced some big Mangroves. We had some big Sharks come in on us we put a few keeper Redfish in the boat, it got hot and was blowing @ 25 mph so we made our way back to marina.

Tip!

Fred's Chug Bug was getting smashed so I put on a chugger of my own, what I noticed was the pop or chug noise was different. I never even got a swirl and Fred had at least 25 fish on his. Mine chugged his sipped and that's what they wanted.
