Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I'm sorry for the lack of repots but I had some computer issues. I will go back a couple weeks and fill you in.

Dec.

The weather has been tough on us with the winds seeming more like spring that winter. I have been out on days where it has blown between 15 and 35 mph for the last few weeks. This wind can help sometimes if you have the right game plan along with a good falling tide. The back country of Whitewater Bay has rivers bordering on the east. These are very fishable when it windy and the wind also can act as a way to carry baitfish down a shore line. the best lures for me and my clients have been The Shadow Rap, Twitchin Rap, a Chartreuse swim bait and of live bait.

There have been some days where I fished out front in Florida Bay as well and we put some fish in the boat.

I fished the Boone family, Thacker and his 2 sons Dustin and James. We worked around in Whitewater Bay and caught some Snook before the winds picked and then headed up a river. Dustin was throwing a swim bait and was constantly hooked up. I also had found some Pilchards and that bought up a monster. The wind was so strong Thacker kept casting them off creating a little chum behind the boat. There was a really loud pop by some thing eating the pilchards, I said cast so we both threw back there. Both corks went down and I thought we had a double but the big Snook ate both baits and was running to the mangroves. Thacker did a god job and got him out of a tree it wrapped up in. We landed the big girl and weighed it at 15 lbs.. It was a pretty decent day they caught a couple slams between them , it was late and we headed in.IMG_1388

I am with one of my Golfing friends today, Tommy, his son Tom and Brian we are in the Whitewater Bay back country. It was windy again today but we moved around allot and caught some great Snook and some big Trout early on so pressure was off. We had a middle of the day negative low tide so we went out along the coast and threw top waters. I explained how it was going to work and where to cast. Brian was a very good angler and got slammed a few times before catching a big Snook and a Redfish. While I was netting bait I netted a 5 inch Ladyfish, this is a precious bait and you have to use it wisely. I waited for the tide to get up a little and put it out. It didn't take long and a really nice Snook ate it, Tom was on he rod and got another nice Snook. We had some finger mullets and they got torn up by Snook and 35 Lb. Lemon Sharks. Great day and made our way back in.

I am In Whitewater Bay with Jeff, Rich and his son Capt. Dave. This is one of those trips where our family paths have crossed. We started out casting at big rolling Tarpon but only catching Ladyfish on every cast. We ran around caught some Trout and decided to run east up the rivers. It was't an easy day but we managed to finally find some Snook laying in some dead trees. We followed that pattern and it work pretty good, the fish were eating the Rapala Shadow Raps. We ended the day on an oyster bar and caught 30 or 40 Trout.

I am with Sebastian, Lily, Andrew, and Emily down at Flamingo, it is the best weather day I have fished in 3 months and I didn't want to waste it. I went to one of my favorite spots and got everyone set up with popping corks and live shrimp. It didn't take long and Andrew had an 18 inch Redfish. Sebastian was throwing a swim bait and Was hooked up to a Snook. Sebastian was the angler in the bunch and showed his skills off by catching several Reds on artificial. The tide was falling so we moved on and went Trout fishing. I had them throwing swim baits and the bite was incredible, they were catching them 4 at a time. I tied on a Rapala Shadow Rap and gave it to Sebastian, I told him he will catch bigger fish with this. On his first cat he caught a 20 inch trout and a bunch more followed. I asked if they wanted to try some thing different like Triple tails. Sebastian didn't know what they were , I said trust me! We ran out to the trap and instantly caught one, he loved it. He caught 3 or 4 and then let Andrew tried. This is when people find out ere skill level its not an easy cast. You have to calculate wind and tide and hen cast, if you miss you do it again if he fish sticks around. Andrew learned that after 20 cast.! This was a 3/4 day so we headed back in.

I am at Flamingo with Bobby and his daughter Amanda today, I was going to fish the Fl. Bay side but the "Fog" was thick enough that I went back country instead. We Started out with a quick Redfish and Snook first for both of them. We moved around slowly this morning because the fog never lifter until 1030. We bent the rods all day every spot produced something, Trout, Snook Redfish, Snappers and we had a acre of ladyfish come up on us in slick calm conditions. They love throwing the top water lures at them. On our last stop we chummed up some Snook catching one and loosing a couple to the trees. It was time to go Booby had flight out later on.

Thanks,

Capt. Jim Hobales
