South Florida Report - Flamingo, Biscayne Bay & Miami

Capt. Jim Hobales
March 26, 2007
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I just returned from the latest FLW Redfish tournament in Titusville. Its pretty cool to be fishing within sight of the space shuttle launch site. As things go pre-fishing was a success we had school after school of Redfish come at us. We felt confident for the tournament we really didn't catch them and beat the school up only to have the winds up to 30 mph affect the area we were fishing. We did not adjust well and our back up spots did not produce, so we didn't catch a fish during the tournament, Titusville is usually one of our best tournaments. I know I will get over it but I really wasn't happy at the end of day 2.

032607- Man it was nice to be back at Flamingo where the fish eat and do not spook because you cast at them. I fished with the Johnson's, Randy, Mary and their daughter Sydney. We started out on some small Tarpon they did not want to play this morning; but everything else did. We fished Florida Bay and cast around some shorelines, Randy caught the first fish, a Trout on a Twitchin rap. I told Randy to a certain area and work his way around the flat, on his first cast he caught a 26 1/2 inch Snook. The tide was just starting to come in and the mullet were getting beat up, after a couple more Trout Randy caught a 28 inch Snook he was casting a Gulp Shrimp. Sydney was next she caught a 21 inch Redfish, it was only 9;30 and we already had a slam. We tried for the Tarpon again but no luck!

The wind was 25 - 30 mph so we went and caught some Trout and Ladyfish we were going to catch Sydney "Jaws".

The one thing I have learned as a guide is, young kids don't know or care what the glamour species are; but they do know Sharks. They are mean, they bite and eat everything! We took the Ladyfish and went to a flat and started to chum using them. It didn't take long when a 80-90 lb Bull Shark came into the chum line. Randy was setup with a bait it was an awesome bite randy really enjoyed it. The fish pulled well over 150 yards of 20 lb Fireline crystal off the reel, we gave chase and caught the Shark. Mary took a couple photos at boat side then we released it. The rest of the afternoon was more of the same; we caught another 60 lb. Bull, 2 Lemons up to 50 lbs. a Spinner, a Black Tip and a Sting Ray. The wind was howling but we made the best of it and tried to catch as many species as possible. The Johnson's were tired sunburned and happy when they drove away, that's just the way I like it.

I'll be fishing the Miami Billfish tournament this weekend hopefully we will have a good tournament and a good report.

tight lines,

Capt. Jimbo
