South Florida Report - Flamingo, Biscayne Bay & Miami

Capt. Jim Hobales
June 10, 2007
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

CaughtLookinCharters fishing report-June 2007

In my report last month I wrote about getting back into a normal wind pattern, I did not think we would already have 3 tropical systems come though. The winds have been consistently “blowing”! The fishing has been very good despite the wind; the mornings seem to be producing plenty of Snook, Reds and even a few small Tarpon down at Flamingo.

The fishing in Government cut has been tough because of the winds, but the nights we are able to fish there have been Tarpon and Permit. This is the time of year the Snook move in to the inlets to spawn so that’s next on the agenda.

South Biscayne Bay should be loaded with Tarpon but having the right weather to get out on the ocean side flats has been tough. The Bonefishing has been good and some Permit being caught.

This month is usually when the Tarpon move into Florida Bay they can range from 5 lbs. up to 150lbs throw in some Snook and a couple Redfish this makes for a fun day. The Tripletails will be out in the Gulf of Mexico these make a fine meal. The one Specie we can’t forget in the warm months are the Sharks, Bulls, Lemons, Black Tips, Sand, Bonnets and occasionally the Hammerhead or Tiger They will normally make an appearance when there’s a good Tarpon or Snook bite. There is no shortage of action just pick a couple species and go after them. Last year we had no mosquitoes in the park but that’s not the case this year, they are back in force. This leads to the old saying “ if the bugs are biting so are the fish”. The warmer it gets the better the Redfishing that is another thing we have to look forward to.

I am fishing with my Russian comrades again today, I would say we went fishing but the reality is they only want to catch. On every cast they expect to hook something, they do not care about species just catching. There’s no bad species in their minds. The love to Shark fish and so do I, what they really like is catching the bait Jacks and Ladyfish. Paul had a couple big Sharks hooked up he finally caught a big Bull Shark. When you use 3-5 lb baits the fish that eat them have some weight as well. We landed Paul’s 150lb Bull and took some photos boat side; Alex was up next. The butter flied Jack was in the water 3 minutes when the reel started screaming and 25 minutes later we released a 6-½ foot Lemon Shark. These guys never get tired of catching but they said “ hey Capt Jimbo how long to get back to dock”. These guys were finally satisfied!

Jack and Larry are on board today and we are fishing Biscayne Bay for Tarpon Permit or Bonefish. The winds are up and the ride across the bay wasn’t fun but we managed to get out on the ocean side flats. The cloud cover and high water made our visibility tough but as we staked out and waited a school of Tarpon swam in front of the boat. Jack got a cast but the Tarpon swam away. The cloud cover was so bad I had to resort to chumming for Bonefish, which produced a bunch of Bonnet, head Sharks and big Boxfish. The rainsqualls and winds were moving thru like a freight train. We made a move across the bay I explained the area and what would happen. It did not take long and the bones started to tail. These are big Bonefish 10lbs and up and there were a bunch of them. The one problem I was having was slowing the boat down which is a great reason to own a Power Pole, which I have not got yet. The wind was blowing so hard the boat was making a wake! Jack and Larry both made several cast at tailing fish, but the fish would spook. The conditions were deteriorating so we called it a day.

The Snook, Reds and Tarpon bite will really be good the next couple of months so if you would like to give it a try give me a call. There are plenty of other options as well for kids or people who would just want to catch, catch, catch! If you fall into these categories give me a call at 305 333 8149 and I will do my best to fulfill your dream.

Let’s go Catch’em
