South Florida Report - Flamingo, Biscayne Bay & Miami

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

061807

Today I was out with my kids and their friend in North Biscayne Bay we started out by sight casting to some really big Tarpon. The Tarpon were laid up on the banks of the intercoastal; we had some really good cast at still targets but only managed a few Barracudas. The Tarpon were large and a couple of them were over the 150lb mark.

We finished off the day by catching Trout, Jacks and Cuda’s.

Today I’m at Flamingo with Don and Gary, they both moved from Miami to west palm and miss fishing here in the Park. Today was a beautiful day no wind and the tide was incoming and we were looking for Snook, Reds and Tarpon up tight in the mangroves and in the potholes. I had them throwing the Twich n Rap, Don was first to catch with a small Snook, a Red and then another Snook. The twich n rap wasn’t producing like it usually does so I rigged a couple of Gulp Jerk baits on 1/8-ounce jig heads. Gary had 4 cast straight where he caught Snook and Reds the fish were definitely feeding on the bottom today. Don wasn’t through he caught several more and the jabs of who’s fish is bigger continued. The tide was dropping as I poled off the flat we were on, they easily could have caught more fish but it was time to get a slam and we needed a Tarpon. The Tarpon had been around all morning but they did not respond to their lures. It was time to make a run to a spot that has some small Tarpon that are usually cooperative. I checked a spot that usually holds a couple schools of Redfish on the way to the Tarpon spot and as usual they were waking, humping up and flashing pretty good. I poled hard to get to them, I had to catch them from behind which is not easy to do. Gary fired a spoon and Don a Twitch n Rap we had a double hook up of big Redfish! The fish were 31 and 32 inches and fought really hard. The guys were pumped, but the school was long gone.

Time for a Tarpon I poled in and as I did there were a school of Tarpon moving away quickly! I poled down a shoreline looking for rolling fish but before I could say anything Gary had a Snook, not to be out done Don caught one right after Gary. The Tarpon were rolling but would not eat that’s Just Tarpon fishing. We tried one more spot which had a big mullet mud running thru it, the mullet were getting busted up real good but I couldn’t get up because it was just to shallow. I poled around the outside edge of the flat and we did see some monster Snook and Don had a big one chase down his spoon but none were caught. The sun was high the heat was on and we called a day, another exiting day at Everglades National Park.
