South Florida Report - Flamingo, Biscayne Bay & Miami

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

062407 Today’s group is Alex his son Alexis and friend Angel. I ran to an area that has been productive for me lately, the mullet schools are humongous and there is a lot of activity in them. We were fishing for about an hour when Alex opened up his cooler, lying right on top was a bunch of BANANA’s! I told him BANANA’S are bad luck and to throw them out he said he didn’t believe me and proceeded to eat one and give one to Angel. I said it’s proven that the fishing will if fact Suck as long as we have BANANA’S on the boat. His son pleaded with him to throw them out but he insisted on keeping them, finally he gave in and on the very next cast his son was hooked up and then again and again. This is my only superstition and it always seems to hold true don’t take BANANA’S ON THE BOAT! The rest of the day went as planned catching fish with Alexis catching his first big Snook.

This afternoon’s trip with Vito, Dan and Rob is a tough one starting at 1 pm on the full moon but we went out and gave it a go. I attempted to get out to the beaches for tarpon but the wind was blowing pretty hard because of a rainstorm off shore. We stayed inshore and caught plenty of Trout, Jacks and Cuda’s.

I dropped off the guys and met up with my buddy Raul and went back out for Tarpon. We gave it about an hour and a half and never got a bite while fishing the beach. I told him let’s go inside Government Cut and try a jig and a Gulp Shrimp. This usually will produce a couple different species. I had a big fish ripping off line, it was fighting like a big Jack or Permit, while I was fighting the fish Raul was booking a trip and didn’t here me tell him which was to drive the boat. The fish got up over the ledge and cut me off while Raul managed a couple Jacks up to 8 lbs. The other guys that were fishing for Tarpon only managed 1 fish.

I am at Flamingo today with Jose and his sons Eric and Leo. Jose Started out quickly by catching a nice 29”Snook a Red and a Trout. There was a lot of action in the area and we managed a few more Trout. I ran to the Gulf where there has been some big Tarpon the only problem west wind at 15 mph had it stirred up. I had netted some Mullet and put 2 out behind the boat. The Shark showed up and destroyed our baits we had 20 or so incredible bites landing 1. I looked up and saw a big dorsal and it was a 10 foot Hammerhead I tried to get the baits in front of him but he had something else on his mind. As the day went on we did hook 1 big Tarpon which thru the bait. I went to a spot I haven’t been to in a while and it was red hot for 3 hours! I ran out of mullet but had a bunch of baits in my chum line so I threw the net again. We must of had 3 baits and caught fish on every one, not all the fish were great but they did catch Jacks, Snook, Trout, Catfish, and the Sharks were out of control. Jose had back-to-back Lemon Sharks over 150lbs., which spooled him. He did manage to land both of them. Leo had a Snook and then a 60 lb Lemon While Eric consistently hooked up and had the bad luck on the boat. Eric had back-to-back Snook come off but the bite was incredible. The guys were beat Jose finally threw in the towel. These guys can’t wait to do it again they booked next Saturday.
