Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Gabe and Reno were part of a 3 boat trip that was all part of high school friend getting together for there buddy Vinny's wedding on Saturday. We started out with a couple small Snook and a Goliath Grouper 20 minutes into the trip. We motored out looking for Tarpon and I told them to work the point while I kept an eye open for Tarpon. Reno cast in to a fallen tree and his drag is started screaming off his reel, he had a monster 38" Snook eat his Gulp Pogy. The Snook was 38' and 13 lbs very light for the size. Reno landed the fish and we got a couple great pic's of the Snook. we covered a lot of water that day catching plenty of fish. Jacks, Snappers Ladyfish were the by catch but we stumbled into a school of Redfish on a bar where Gabe caught one and had another hook up which manage to come loose. I told them I have a big Snook spot where we have to make really long cast and can't make any disturbance while we are there; the fish are really spooky there. On the approach Reno caught a nice Redfish on the point , while Gabe was making a long cast to the area i pointed out. On his first cast he hooked up to a snook that was obviously upset, she ran 20 yards right then 20 left and in and out. I told him there's your monster Snook take it easy, just keep the line tight . Gabe brought the Snook boat side and there was a lot of screaming, the Snook was a monster. This snook was shorter but much thicker around the head and shoulders

measuring 35 inches and 16 lbs. I took some pic's of of proud and smiling Gabe with his big Snook.

we made a 30 minute stop on the way back and cast at some Tarpon, this was an awsone setting! The water was slick calm and the Tarpon were laid up all we could see was the tip's of their dorsal's on the surface. We had about 10 shots and Reno had a 100 pound Tarpon eat his lure and take off to the races. It didn't last long but he will always remember it.

Today I am with Wally and his wife Lizzy, I fished with Wally last year on a day the weather deteriorated and it happed again this year the wind made it tough, but again we persevered.

It took along time and and we covered 90 miles round trip but we ended up with a couple small Snook, with Jacks, Ladyfish Trout mixed in. Lizzy learned to cast quickly and caught plenty of fish all by herself. The unfortunate part was the fishing was incredible tough this day. Wally said he appreciated how hard I worked and he been fishing long enough to know the conditions were tough, that is the best thing a customer can say to me on a day I am feeling like I didn't get it done!

Derek his small daughters Jade and Andrea were fishing along with his friend Dave and again today I have my work cut out it is really breezy. I netted some bait and went to work it didn't take long, Jade caught a 3 lb. Jack and Andrea had a nice Snook eat her bait and start peeling off line. She battled the Snook for 5 minutes finally getting it to the boat where her proud father took some photo's. The rest of the day was difficult the wind was 25 mph and the floating grass was just everywhere making it hard for the bait to get to the bottom. The end result was a bunch of Trout Jack, ladyfish and a few Catfish.

I am fishing with Zack and his son Clay today in Whitewater Bay for Tarpon. The conditions were not to bad early but by 9 am the wind picked up to over 20 mph. That didn't discourage us we cast and cast at the Tarpon but they were not eating. We changed our strategy and started fishing the shorelines, catching Snook, Trout, Redfish, Snappers Ladyfish, Jacks and Goliath Groupers. we went back and tried the Tarpon again but they still weren't interested. Clay who is 14 years old and a dynamite caster hooked a big Snook and was really excited unfortunately it came unglued. The kid was a little upset, but kept casting! Clay made a good cast under a over hanging tree, his Gulp Shrimp got hit hard and he was attached to a big Snook; again! I don't understand it, I watched him set the hook and I thought he did set it right but the fish came off . Its possible the hook had a flat spot from hitting a mangrove branch. I know he will catch a Snook someday but I really wanted it to be this day. Zack had landed a couple Snook and Clay wanted one too! He did get the thrill of having the big one that got away story.

Happy new Year
