Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer Sweeps In

Warm, tropical weather has had fish responding to summer-like patterns. With the sun high above this is the ideal time of the year to stalk the flats of Flamingo and south Florida. Soon summer rains and spring tides will make the crown of the flats accessible to reach tailing reds. Snook, trout, and others will share habitat with these reds and can be caught with the same lure and technique.

The last trip to Flamingo produced snook, reds, and trout once again. We did miss the tarpon but it won't be for long. Hopefully, this will be a promising year for tripletail since last year they were a bit educated and scattered. I am also hoping to encounter the endangered sawfish as the last giant managed to saw through the braided line.

A scout trip with a friend and guide from Chokoloskee proved to be a great day of fishing when we encountered schools of spawning snook. The largest fish weighed ten pounds on the boga scale. We caught four other snook, a redfish, and bonnethead sharks. Then we headed inland toward brackish water and found lots more snook but they were finicky. The snook "kissed" the fly several times but would not hang themselves on our feathers. The music of literally dozens of snook making popping sounds culminated this adventure.

I am expecting to fish Flamingo again shortly and will keep everyone posted.

Good fishing,

Capt. Ariel
