Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

MURDER or just “red drum” spelled backwards ?

Fishing has been both good and bad depending on the tactics being used. Large amounts of grass and freshwater are still around therefore play accordingly. We have been catching fish in the cloudy water as well as the gin-clear flats from all geographic positions. East, west, and south of Flamingo marina have had their share of fish but one thing I suggest is to stay in the area that is holding bait and fish. In other words, don’t leave fish to find fish.

Most of the last several trips have been half day affairs due to threatening rain and storms but yet we have had a busy time dealing with some bent rods. Mr. J. Farach would try his luck battling a half dozen seatrout and snapper, ladyfish, and a seven-pound crevalle. It was a lot of fun watching him trying to land this tireless jack before finally releasing it. A different day would find me fishing with Mr. A. Soler and his son Danny. And son Danny was the hero by pulling in two trout, one weighed slightly over two pounds. The father and son team also caught some snapper and jacks. The snook, the main species sought after this day, just did not cooperate.

Tarpon, snook, snapper, trout, and tripletail will continue to linger all summer long but the real deal will be the red thing. My electric motor will make haven in a quiet corner in the garage until I remove the cobwebs sometime in the middle of fall season. The casting platform will take the electric’s place for the time being. What I am trying to hint is that I’ll be in extreme shallows (9’” to 12”) hunting red drum as they tail, meander, and sleep all along the flats, potholes, and points. This month is a sight fishers dream and the pinnacle month for fly casting to tailers on glassy-calm mornings. Now do you understand why some use the MURDER expression for red drum? If you ‘gotta go’ like I do, drop me a line because I know what you’re feeling and you’ll be within casting distance before you can say “RED DRUM.“
