Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
Blame it on the Rain
Fishing at Flamingo has improved for most species recently. Expect big and plenty trout action, redfish, and snook too. Tarpon action has slowed a bit but is only going to get better over the next few months. Expect to move until clear water is found since some areas have been a little stirred. The rain will help settle things down, cool temperatures and trigger a serious bite.
Rick and David caught a 31” snook in only 10” deep water while sight casting. Karen Batson and Kole nailed snook, shark, trout all on artificial. They also battled a monster that tugged my skiff into the brush. Not even with 30lb. Power Pro and all three of us holding could we subdue this beast. Well, it happens that we fished the same spot a week later with Dr. Jim and partner Dag. Jim hauled in a goliath that weighed 25 pounds and Dag, a 5 pound goliath fish. Jim caught this fish just in time because we were hit by a massive storm producing near 40knot winds for two hours making things even more adventurous.
Mark Neil caught a jumbo sheepshead, quite unusual for being so far into spring. Mark, a dentist, thought the sheepshead had an unusual set of teeth. His partner, also called Jim landed several five-pound crevalles. Bill Elliot and Ed caught trout, redfish, and snapper on the fly. I use a specialized clear-sinking line for that application.
Freshwater reports include phenomenal catches as well including Jay Greer’s 5-pound bass. A separate trip produced many 3 to 4 pound largemouth for John Hoffseth. Dr. Mike Fleming and Larry Barker joined me for a successful peacock bass trip. Larry, a bass pro and outdoor writer, set a line class world record during this outing.
This is a great time of year to fish south Florida for inshore and freshwater species. I cater to beginners and advanced anglers specializing in instruction and education. Please don’t hesitate to call and talk fishing.
This fishing report is dedicated to the people that served during the War against Irag, and most importantly, GOD!
