Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Whitewater Bay and Everglades Backcountry Fishing Report and Forecast

The best fishing the backwater has to offer takes place in spring when large tarpon begin to show. Heavy amounts of rainfall also bring snook to the shorelines along the Gulf of Mexico. May will be the last month for keeping snook as all will have to be released anytime thereafter until the season reopens in September. If tarpon are not seen in inside waters a peek on the Gulfside usually pays off. For tackle, techniques, and tides stick to the following: choose a high outgoing tide and toss 4-6” Yozuri plugs or similar. If the plugs are not attracting any strikes then use heavy bucktail jigs like a 3/8 oz. with a Charlie Brewer Slider worm (5”pearl/chartreuse tail is my personal favorite). This plastic tail is used to attach to the bucktail and I, many times, opt to slick in a small cylinder with rattles since the worm is large enough to accept it.

Offshore in the Gulf cobia, grouper, and snapper are hitting baits readily when wind is less than 15 knots. Anyone interested in an offshore Everglades trip please contact me because we are using a 20+ boat for this excursion. Your arms will be sore from all of the action. Permit are abundant throughout the summer. Make sure to bring live crabs and a few chumbags along. The markers and wrecks that are just outside the park can be very productive. Depth is usually around 15 feet and medium to heavy tackle is necessary from losing fish to sharp obstacles. Tarpon, tripletail, barracuda, goliath grouper, and sharks also frequent these areas.

Florida Bay continues to produce excellent trout fishing. Snook have also been caught near some of the islands along with redfish. In Florida Bay Spike It Plastics have really made a difference. The dense holographic stand out so well fish really find and grab these baits. Try the 4” boot tail minnow in the amber/red tail or the 4” chartreuse or pearl grubs. Fish can’t resist. Their web is www.ispikeit.com Please call if you have any questions about these products or any of my services. All full days offer a NO FISH -NO PAY guarantee.

Recent catches include Zultan’s party with over 30 trout, two snook, and snapper. Charlie brought the luck with him from Germany. Quentin Felty and Victor also teamed up to catch trout on fly until Zultan, Charlie, and Zultan Sr. returned for the evening split trip that took us into the night. Topwater fishing was incredible.
