Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
February 21, 2006
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Flamingo out front is chock full of trout, some drum and reds. Snook, work a little harder for them than usual. The highlight for me and client/friend Howard Stern was guiding him to a twenty eight pound cobia on FLY. Then, watch him get a 15 pounder on FLY. We caught 5 more and then came in and met Mark Sosin at the marina, yes, I showed him the fish. This all sounds real funny-the names but it's bonafide story and a great day on the water.

Fishing in Whitewater Bay has required a bit more “hunting” in the backcountry. A lot more fish have seen quite a few more boats and require a stealthier approach. Expect to see more trout in this area that is one species that is readily willing to bite. Snook season has just reopened and good old linesides is always worth casting to. For trout try the Joe River area, we have taken some large fish recently and then travel north of marker 26 for numbers. Use the ladyfish for the goliath in the Shark Rivers.

Backcountry Gulf waters will also be thriving for that mixed bag of gamefish.

Good weather days will bring the big tarpon into the back bays, especially as we approach spring. Get the baitcasters, bagley plugs and the 10-weight flyrod and some white lightning deceivers.

The Herman Lucerne Tournament is scheduled for April 22 and 23, 2006. The objective of the catch and release tourney is to benefit children’s services at Homestead Hospital. If you are interested in participating please check out www.hermanlucerne.com I am considering serving as a guide if I can get some willing anglers, please drop me a line for rates and details.
