Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring and Summer Fishing gets hot for snook, tarpon, and redfish

Summertime in the backcountry is great time to be on the water fishing. Snook and tarpon will be eager to take flies and lures that are well presented. Fishing in general for other species should get better with rising water temperatures from Whitewater Bay north to Chokoloskee. The rivermouths and islands along the coast are always worth casting to when moving water is shifting and passing.

Lure selections should include spoons, jigs, and hardbaits like topwaters and rattling crankbaits. Work them on 8 to 12 pound spin or 12 to 17 pound casting tackle. Use fluorocarbon leader in clear water but if it is murky regular monofilament clear will do just as well. For flies it’s really hard to beat seaducers for skinny water fish. If the fish are deep go with a half deceiver, half clouser minnow. I always carry an eight and a ten weight to cover all the bases. Summer is the time to bring the flyrods!

OK so the Florida Bay ramp is closed at Flamingo, where will you launch? Put in at the Whitewater Bay ramp or try the Rod and Gun Club at Everglades City. Offshore waters will bring large numbers of permit together close to wrecks and buoys. The county line ramp and Caribbean Club in Key Largo ramps will also be a great choice for those chasing tailing reds in eastern Florida Bay. Very few boats will be venturing here therefore the fishing will be spectacular like it was when it had been closed after the hurricanes. Bring plenty of drinks and a cool hat because you will be tired from the catching. Summer fishing is usually very good and fast action is the norm.
