Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Late Fall: Flamingo's Best Fishery

Fall is a favorite time to fish the Flamingo area. Temperatures are starting to cool down, it is the start of the redfish migration, and fishing is generally very good. Fall fishing also happens to be one of the more productive times of the year for this particular area because a variety of species still abound. Late November and December are great times to get into reds and snook, especially a lot of them. Trout season is now closed in the South zone so remember to toss them back.

The way I like to fish the fall includes a variety of the following techniques. Finding live bait in the morning is always a proirity. We’ll set up a Cajun cork on one outfit and freeline another with a split shot for weight. If live bait cannot be found we often use lures and plugs. Gold spoons are an excellent choice, especially with a small strip of Fishbites as a trailer. Fish are attracted to the juices released by this bait strip.

The Flamingo area is seeing catches of tarpon, snook, redfish, and trout with regularity. Some anglers are even having success with bonefish, those who are running south. Fishing will continue to improve and as long as the skipper can work around cold front winds. East Cape will be where many boats will be but not necessarily all the fish. In high winds that area gets very muddy, try going south between banks on high tide, that is where I find large schools of redfish and snook. Snapper can also be caught in numbers and sized up to four pounds. Snake Bight will also hold fish however; they have been a bit skittish due to growing boat traffic.
