Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
This past week started slowly. Last weekend the water along the Gulf coast river mouths was still quite muddy so we fished inside Whitewater, finding small snook, redfish, and large ladyfish.
The last few days though the situation has changed dramatically. There are lots of Spanish mackerel and bluefish just offshore of the coast in 7 to 10 feet of water. Cobia action has also picked up dramatically with fish from barely keeper size (about 12 to 14lbs) up to more than 40lbs cruising by your chum line. The river mouths that we checked have also turned on with bright speckled trout up to about 4lbs feeding heavily on the falling tide. Add some nice reds and snook laid up next to downed trees and it's been great.
Yesterday to add some spice we also had spinner sharks up to about 5' long in the same areas where the macks were. One angler in the boat next to ours hooked one on a light spinning rod with a jig and we watched as they chased that fish for almost an hour... You'll know when you've hooked one when he starts jumping, sometimes clearing the water by six feet or more.
This time of year there's lots to do even for folks that just want to do some sightseeing in the saltwater 'Glades. The first place we stopped for bait yesterday had a bald eagle soaring directly overhead. When we got back to the ramp we saw more saltwater crocs than I can ever remember seeing at one time sunning themselves. I think I counted more than eight on one stretch of bank. The biggest was at least 13 feet long. Flamingo is always a treat!
