Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Capt. Bob LeMay

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past weekend we finally did some snook fishing out of Flamingo. Louis Cortes and his son, also Louis, landed a 32" snook each before heavy rain slowed us down... We started out the day by chumming up a variety of bait along the edge of a bank and filled the live well. While waiting for one last shot at the bait both kept busy with trout, ladyfish, and mangrove snapper. Before we moved, Louis Sr. stuck a very large snook estimated at about 20lbs on 8# line. The fish ran off half of the line on the reel before finally wearing through the leader...

We ended the day jumping small tarpon on the way back to the boat ramp. This time of year it's hard to know where to go first. There are big reds in the shallows, snook in potholes, island moats, and in deep troughs near the beaches. The giant tarpon are in river mouths and any areas with a good supply of bait. It will stay this way until the first cold front sometime in October, then the pattern will change.

Tight Lines

By the way for those interested I'll be giving a free seminar on backcountry fishing at West Marine in Hollywood on 18 Sept at 7Pm. The seminar will last for an hour or two and cover a variety of topics. For more info call the store at (954)921-1800. Thanks
