Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week my bookings were almost non-existant. That was actually good news since the weather would have disappointed most anglers. We finally got out on Monday in spite of bad weather and were pleasantly surprised with much better conditions than forecasted. Water temps now are around 72 degrees at dawn and rise to 76 or 77 during the day. The water was clear in Whitewater and Oyster Bays and still had a good taste of salt despite all the rain.

The big tarpon are still in selected river mouths feeding on large mullet at the change of the tide. Jaime Rivero, visiting from Mexico, put one of about 100lbs in the air right next to the boat. It ate a large, live bait but threw the hook on the second jump... The big fish should be around in a few spots until the water cools a bit more.

We went on to catch and release a good variety of fish, from snook to sheepshead in the various spots we tried. By the end of the day each angler had a backcountry slam with snook, redfish, and speckled trout caught and released.

If the weather will co-operate (hopefully by the weekend) I'll be back at Flamingo, paying the fish a visit. I'm still looking forward to trying out some new flies on the redfish in shallow waters.

On another note I had a chance to visit the Bombardier team at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show this past weekend. Since I'm hoping to re-power soon with one of the new E-Tec Evinrude motors I was glad to get a chance to look at it closely. You'll be seeing lots of them on flats skiffs in the next few years is my prediction.
