Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well it's finally that time of year again. A few shrimp are starting to move at night and the tarpon in the urban areas of Biscayne Bay are turned on like someone threw a switch... Last night I fished Alan Lewis and his nephew Philip from New York. We were sight-fishing tarpon up to almost 60lbs using spinning gear with DOA and Exude shrimp at close quarters. You could actually watch the fish turn and take the lure... We were also set up with a fly rod since these are perfect fish for the fly, but both anglers were having too much fun with the spinning gear. Some of the bites were so close that I was certain one of the fish would jump in the boat with us, but we managed to get missed although we had a few close calls.

Water temperatures last night ranged from 65 down to 62 degrees, although surface temps were quite a bit cooler. It always takes a few days of cold weather to drop Bay temperatures significantly. We did notice the tarpon action slow noticeably when temperatures had dropped toward the end of the evening. With a warming trend predicted for the next few days the night action should remain steady. My only problem is that day bookings will keep me off of the water (and vice versa-- it's hard to get started at 4Am for a day trip when you only get home just before 1Am from the night tarpon). This small problem will continue all the way through April - as long as the small (and not so small) tarpon have a few shrimp to feed on. Everyone should have this kind of fishing. The next three days I'll be fishing out of Flamingo so the night action will just have to go on without me...

Last night the tarpon did all the releasing. No matter how hard my anglers struck the fish, they were able to jump off... I think they'll be back. Several times the fish were so numerous in the spots we fished that it was tough to pick out the one to cast to. Tarpon heaven!
