7/5/09 Shallow Water Fireworks

Capt. Steven Tejera
July 5, 2009
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Snook blowing baits out of the water, schools of bonefish pushing and tailing on the flats, tarpon laid up and rolling around, massive schools of redfish tailing and eating just about anything thrown their way, I think the fish have had a little celebration of their own.
On the ocean side of the Florida Keys, I have been finding plenty of bonefish. The only downside was all the cloud cover and southwest wind we had to deal with. We still managed to capitalize on a few fish that could not refuse a live shrimp.
The backcountry has been on fire with snook, tarpon, redfish and trout on the feed. The fish ate Gulp shrimp and Jerkbaits rigged weedless and DOA Jerkbaits rigged weedless. We also found schools of big black drum up on the flats that wanted nothing to do with our artificials. A fly imitating a shrimp/minnow(I call it a shrinnow) has been a good fly to throw at both snook and reds. There has also been plenty of small tarpon in the morning which are always fun on fly. The week has ended with excellent weather and some good times in the shallow water.
Its hot, both the fishing and temps. Lets go fishing!
