Somedays it winter ,somedays it spring!

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week the fishing was from good to tough , we went from a high of 85 degrees on Tuesday to @ 70 on the weekend. The Tarpon which were so thick a couple day prior had moved a bit with the approaching cold front. This week is should be back on with temps in the 80 's.

I was with Bob and Charlie today we started out with Bob jumping a 40.lb. Tarpon on 1st cast while we were catching small Ladyfish for Tarpon bait. We stopped on a couple different spots an put caught 30 Trout before running up to look for the bigger Tarpon in the Gulf. The Tarpon were gone from a spot where they were loaded days before! I ran around looking for them and caught some Pilchards in the mean time. We started to fish the shorelines and chummed a bit which turned into a good Snook bite, no giants but enough for a couple hours. We had a couple big bites which where they were run into trees and cut off, so we'll never no how big. Charlie caught a nice Redfish during the Snook frenzy. We did have a couple big Tarpon roll around us during the action. The rest of the day consisted of Redfish, Jacks Sharks, Goliath Grouper, more Trout and Ladyfish. Great day with 2 great guys!

I was with Gary his wife Marylyn, Rocket and his wife Berta down at Flamingo. They were camping down there in their Motor home and wanted to catch some Trout for dinner. We went out and tried to catch them dinner but with the full moon and stiff S.W. winds it wasn't so easy. We started out in Palm Lake where Rocket started it off with a 3lb Trout. The rods were bending with plenty of action but the trout were just short of keepers. We worked hard but the managed to catch enough for a fish fry. At the end of the day we caught 30 or so Trout, Snappers Ladyfish and Jacks.

This afternoon I had my brother come down with his sons Mark and Andrew. It was really busy around Snake Bite but the winds were blowing @ 20 plus so I didn't want to run out west. I ran to a spot I haven't been to in a while . It didn't take long and these 2 kids put on a clinic of catching fish. Mark started with a 8.lb Snook and then hooked a second on the next cast. Andrew was catching Jacks and getting a little mad. The bite completely stopped so we moved on. The next couple hours we just bent the rods with Trout, Jacks, Ladyfish and Snappers.

The warmer weather should spark a good Tarpon by the weekend.
