Good Spring Fishing

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
March 12, 2009
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

South Florida waters have remained cool through the onset of this spring. Although we've had a few blustery days, there have been many warm and calm days to choose from. Inside Flamingo waters are seeing tarpon, snook, and bass up the headwaters. Florida Bay has had a great trout bite. Offshore waters have seen a good number of cobia taken up to around 35 pounds. The west coast shorelines have had mixed results, depending on the weather. And some of the inlets have had really strong currents-making them a little tricky to fish.

One charter party had great success in Florida Bay waters. The Rounsaville's caught two keeper size cobia, several trout, and many jacks. They spinfished mostly with live shrimp and also used live bait. I have also been fishing for bass and we are just starting to get some results. I am teaching someone to flyfish so we are encountering peacock and largemouth bass, mostly done sightcasting. Some charter captains are starting to get some more business lately, we are in prime time and it should get even better throught spring and the beginning of the summer.

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

Boaters make sure you have all safety gear up-to-date. Some time ago I had to replace my flares. Check the items with expiry dates carefully and all PFD's. Coast Guard and or park service will check periodically.

If any of my readers has the Florida Sportsman May of 2007 issue, please contact me-it features a story called "Lose your Net, Save Your Life." I am trying to scan and post my published work on my website. Somehow, I am missing that issue and backorders were out. We are currently trying to bring everything current to www.captainariel.com

There's one more story I need a copy of, it is called "Tether Your Tools" and I do not have publication month or year. If anyone knows details on that one, please contact me. I have moved so some things got lost in process.

Tight lines and good fishing.
