Tarpon Time!

Capt. Jim Hobales
March 18, 2015
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I am at Flamingo with Mario today, he is one of my best buddies and he has some of his business partners with him. Ron, Mike and his son Nick. It is a really windy day @ 25 mph so we had our work cut out. We started off casting at giant Tarpon for the first hour or so but the fish weren't eating. We moved on to a spot where we could bent the rod and caught loads of Trout, big Jacks and Ladyfish. We moved on to a spot that has been holding some bait and threw the net a couple times and loaded the well. We ran out and started to fish the creeks in the Gulf of Mexico but missed the tide as it was already out and super low. We tried chumming up some Snook but with no tide it wasn't working. We saw some rolling Tarpon out in the Gulf so we chased them, waiting for some tide movement. It paid off with a great Trout bite, the guys were casting Rapala sub walks. They caught some kind of fish on every cast for over an hour we had baits out behind the boat which kept getting eaten Sharks. Nick is 16 and wanted a big Bull Shark and got his wish with a 70 lb. Bull. Mike was next with and even bigger Shark which just would give up but eventually we got it. They had to get back for prior engagements so we called it a day,

I am with 2 of my favorite customers today, Bob and Charlie, only because a volcano issue in Costa Rica . Bob was supposed to be there catching Sails, Marlin and Roosterfish but they weren't allowing any flights into Costa Rica. I told them there some good Tarpon action and we were on! The day didn't go as planned because of some kind of vapor lock or water in the fuel so we changed the plan. It worked out pretty good we stayed close to Flamingo most of the day to make sure we would get back and caught allot of fish. We had Snook, Trout, Big Jacks, Tarpon, and big and little Sharks. Once we got going the boat ran fine and the drags were screaming just what Bob asked for. The catch of the day was totally different, we spotted a laid up Tarpon. Bob made the cast and his drag is screaming giving him a pretty good fight but not coming to surface . 10 minutes into it he says "I Think I hooked a Turtle" ! Well you know he did a around a 20 pounder. We got it up next to the boat unhooked it and laughed about it all day. It was a fun day with lots of fish and 2 tired anglers and one beat captain!
