Good Winter Fishing from Flamingo, Whitewater Bay, and Biscayne

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
January 17, 2011
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the backcountry has been good for redfish and black drum. We have been using shrimp for bait and fishing them on jigheads on the downcurrent side of creeks and deep holes.

Fishing for trout has also been good. We have been working grass beds and points between islands in the backcountry.

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

Winter fishing means finding deep drops and working the bottom slowly for drum, snook, and species like sheepshead, trout, and grouper.
On the open areas that lead to Gulf there are plenty of Spanish mackerel for good fishing. Bring a chumbag and you will find yourself into snapper, bluefish, and other surprises. Same applies to the fish in Biscayne Bay. It's mackerel time. And these are pretty good sized fish for light tackle fun. Here you will also find jacks, and plenty of bait for bluewater fishing.

The deep cuts and passes will always have fish on the coldest days. Find an outgoing tide and fish live baits on the bottom for best results. Tarpon like to sit in places like Government Cut and Bear Cut in the bay. In the Everglades backcountry the deeper places to try would be East Cape and Shark River.

Fishing should be pleasant and productive throughout the winter in south Florida. Just make a boating and fishing plan according to the weather and temperatures and you will see success on every outing.
