Back To School Fishing- Great Action on the Ft Lauderdale Reef

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

School is back in session again and the multitudes of families doing their summer vacations in Fort Lauderdale has subsided. This is really, really good for our fishing trips. Instead of a million boats up and down the coast fishing the spots, if you look out onto the Ft Lauderdale reefs these days, there's only a handful of boats out there. That means, less competition for fish or for spots. The catches this week are way better than normal. On our drift fishing trips, both bottom fishermen going for snapper as well as the bigger game fishermen fishing for kingfish, are doing great on our drift boat trips. And on our sportfishing charters, we're getting into some huge dolphin, wahoo, an odd-ball sailfish and plenty of bonitos and kings.

With less boats out there fishing for the fish, not just in Fort Lauderdale but also in Miami, Pompano and the Florida Keys, there are more and more fish swimming up the Gulfstream to meet up with us here in Fort Lauderdale. September is a transition month for us. The multitude of bonitos and kingfish are beginning to dwindle down. To replace them, the wahoo and mahi-mahi are moving in with larger numbers. Sailfish, a fish that bites best in the late fall through late winter, begin biting now in September and become more and more aggressive from now through then. It's great to see the sailfish showing up so early. It usually is a good indicator that we're coming into an excellent sailfish season.

Drift fishing trips are crushing it too. Instead of 30-40 persons on our trips, in September we average 10-15 persons on the trip. That's awesome considering you can do the drift fishing trip for only $45 per person. That's almost a private charter with that few of people out there. The decreased amount of lines in the water usually results in a lot of extra fish. Snappers, grouper, kingfish and all the bottom fish are biting good on these trips and we also get the rare cobia or mahi-mahi on this trip too. For the next 2 months, except for weekends, we will have light numbers on all our drift fishing trips. It's a great time to come fishing and a great value.

Good luck to everyone fishing this week with us. If you're looking to get out and fish, give us a call. If you are flexible and can go on a day when we aren't busy, we can make one heck of a deal to come out on a charter. I'll sea ya on the water.
